What Kind of Healthy Foods Should Consumed by Cancer Patients?

In choosing foods for cancer patients, it should include vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and beans. Each of them contains with a wide variety of cancer-fighting components like explained in the following details.

Whole Grains

Whole grains are your daily flavored and hearty fillings including brown rice, corn, oatmeal, whole-wheat bread, and other whole grains. All whole grains are a good source of dietary fiber, while individual grains can provide different compounds including magnesium, protein, manganese, niacin, thiamin, vitamin B6, protease inhibitors, saponins, phytic acid, etc. Dietary fiber gained from whole grains may lower risk of some cancers, particularly colorectal cancer. This fiber helps to add bulk, dilute any harmful substances in the gut then speed the passage out. It’s a way to support healthful bacteria growth in colon and prevent weight gains.

Vegetables

Cruciferous and dark green leafy vegetables are super foods to fight cancer. All cruciferous vegetables, particularly broccoli, are a good source of vitamin C and manganese. Broccoli is rich in glucosinolates that form isothiocyanates and indoles, phytochemicals to decrease inflammation, cancer cell growth, and inhibit activating carcinogens enzymes. Meanwhile, dark green leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach, and lettuce are excellent sources of fiber, vitamin K, folate, and carotenoids. Carotenoids such as lutein and zeaxanthin with saponins and flavonoids act as antioxidants to prevent cancer.

Fruits

Fruits that have been studied to offer anti-cancer properties are including apples, berries, cherries, grapefruits, and some others.

- Apples are a good source of fiber and vitamin C at least 10% of daily recommended amount. Apples also contain with several phytochemicals for anti-cancer effects including flavonoids such as quercetin, epicatechin, anthocyanins, and triterpenoids as anti-inflammatory and antioxidants properties.

- Berries, including blueberries, cranberries, raspberries and strawberries, contain with several cancer-fighting components. All berries are rich in vitamin C, fiber, ellagic acid, and a wide range of phytochemicals. Even blueberries have been studied to provide the most potent antioxidant called anthocyanosides.

Legumes, Nuts, and Soy

Dry beans and peas such as kidney and black beans, red lentils, and others are rich in fiber (20%) and protein (10%), also folate. Legumes contain with cancer-fighting components including lignans, saponins, antioxidant compounds from phytochemicals (flavonoids, triterpenoids, inositol, protease inhibitors and sterols), and resistant starch to protect colon cells from cancers.

From nuts, walnut is the most widely studied for its cancer-preventive effects. Walnuts are a good source of polyphenols and phytochemicals that act as antioxidant properties. Other protective compounds in walnuts include elligitannins, omega-3 fatty acid, vitamin E, melatonin, copper, manganese, magnesium, etc. Meanwhile, soy, including processed products such as tempeh, tofu, soymilk, edamame, etc., is rich in protein, fiber, magnesium, potassium, manganese, and copper. The other anti-cancer compounds include isoflavones, saponins, phenolic acids, sphingolipids, phytic acids, and enzyme-regulating proteins.

Actually, foods for cancer patients are good in general, particularly for those who want to loss weights. Why? It’s because excess body weight followed by unhealthy diet is the leading risk factor of cancer growth. So, change your meals to only healthy foods from now on.
